SportsBOO HOO: This Jay Cutler nonsense has just about worked my last good nerve. I foolishly threw myself into the Broncos’ offseason, as I watched new head coach Josh McDaniels cut loose all the dead weight that had held my favorite team back. There’s a reason this team collapsed this past season, and it made no sense to keep bums like Dre Bly around any longer than necessary. He moved swiftly and brought in legitimate NFL talent. I loved everything that was happening — especially the Brian Dawkins pickup. But Jay Cutler’s petulant behavior after he thinks the Broncons offered him up as part of a potential Matt Cassel deal is flat-out embarrassing. Hey, Jay, I have some news for you. You haven’t won anything! You’re 17-20 as an NFL starter and you haven’t appeared in the playoffs. Just because you’re blessed with a rocket for an arm doesn’t give you the right to act like a whiny, spoiled brat just because your name was tossed around the media as a possible trade candidate. Did McDaniels and his crew offer up Cutler in trade talks? I don’t know, and frankly, it doesn’t matter. Unless you’re Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, there is very little job security in this league. Cutler better get used to it. Being a successful quarterback in the NFL isn’t predicated on how hard you throw the football. It’s about whether or not you can rally your teammates and inspire them to play better when their backs are against the wall. Cassel proved that down the stretch for the Patriots last season. Everybody wrote off New England after Brady tore his knee to shreds, but by the midway point of the season, Cassel had that entire team rallying around him. Cutler is the ideal quarterback to rack up statistics in a blowout, but what has he done to prove that he can get it done when it really matters? I really hope Cutler grows up and has a monster season for the Broncos this year. But the events of this past week have turned me into a skeptic. nprevenas@gvnews.com | 547-9747
