The 144 golfers who participated in the Mel Chaufty Golf Tournament enjoyed a wonderful day of golf, contests, prizes, continental breakfast and lunch.

The special guest host of the day’s event was Mel, himself. The tournament was exceptionally successful financially. Although the final figures are not in, the tournament raised over $11,000.

This money will go to helping Chaufty, a local Green Valley Lifetime PGA Professional and Instructor, who has been diagnosed with cancer and does not have health insurance. His battle is being fought with chemotherapy and radiation.

The tournament was in two flights — men’s teams and mixed groups.

Men’s first place went to the team of D. Clay, J. Carter, J. Martin, and M. Scott; second place was M. Lazares, B. Scamlan, B. Steele, and M. Wilbur; third place went to J. Bridgewater, M. Hawbaker, J. Nason, and J. Sweet; and the team of J. Briggs, B. Dean, J. Mork, and B. Rhodes took fourth place.

The mixed group flight winner was H. Aden, J. Biorkman, R. Ragland, and B. Schmitt; second went to the team of E. McGinnis, D. Nord, M. Parker, and M. Smith; third place went to E. Wright, R. Wright, P. Ingebretson, and B. Dodge; and D. Biere, R. Biere, D. Meyer, and D. Morales took fourth place.

The putting contest winner was Mike Carter. The 50/50 raffle was won by Ann King, who generously donated her winnings. The continental breakfast was donated by Carolyn Tandy.

Local golf Pros and courses donating to the event included: Bill Brooks and Dean Gloy from Tubac Resort, Marvel Barnard and Marty Comacho from Haven, Maria Przymierski from Conoa Ranch, Doug Jacobson from Canoa Hills and Steve Brown of Desert Hills. Other area golf courses donating prizes included Haven, Quail Creek, Canoa Ranch, San Ignacio, Canoa Hills, Desert Hills, Torres Blancas, Santa Rita, Kino Springs, Palo Duro, Davis-Monthan AFB, Tubac, Arizona National, Tucson City Courses and Starr Pass.

Special thanks goes out to Karen and John Flammang and Bill Brooks.
