PFLAG meets at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship House, 17616 S. La Canada Drive, Sahuarita. This is a confidential support group for parents and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons. Information, June Wortman, 648-5877.

Jan. 12

Rose Society meets at 9 a.m. in the Community Rose Garden for the annual pruning. Coffee and donuts in the Art Room at the East Center. All are asked to bring pruners, gloves, rakes and other tools to help. Newcomers may come observe and learn. Karen Packer, 777-5624.


Green Valley R/C Flyers meet at 7 p.m. at La Posada’s rec center. Information: Tim Kelly, 891-6201.

At 10 a.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, members of the GV Chamber Music Society will perform music by Handel, Scharwenka, Telemann, and Dvorak. The program is free and open to the public. Performers will be Betty Maurstad, soprano; Michael Finkelstein, piccolo, trumpet; Tom Hanselmann, ‘cello; Mary Lonsdale Baker, piano; Cal Turner, clarinet; Anneke Mattson, piano, Marya Giesy, violin; and Esther Siebold, piano.

Green Valley Branch No. 77, Fleet Reserve Association, will have a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Cow Palace in Amado. Active duty, reserve and retired personnel and honorably discharged former members of all service, all paygrades, E-1 through O-10, who have some enlisted service in the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, and their spouses, are invited. Green Valley Resort Homes board meets at 9 a.m. at West Center.

Green Valley Forum meets at 10 a.m. at East Center. Frederic Lange, master chef at the Lavender Restaurant, will talk about the challenges and rewards of being a French chef. All GVR members and their eligible guests are welcome,

Grief Share Seminars - “Your Journey from Mourning to Joy” -—a special weekly seminar and support group for people who are grieving the death of someone close to them, begins at the Evangelical Free Church, 1393 W. Mission Twin Buttes Road, from 1 to 3 p.m. The series will run through March 23 at varying times. There is a one-time fee of $25 for class materials. Information: Ruth Westrate, 393-0328.

Green Valley Genealogical Society, 1 to 3 p.m. at the St. Francis In the Valley Episcopal Church, 600 S. La Canada Drive. (Please note -- we are back on schedule for our regular meeting day of the third Thursday.) Kathy Goodrich will present a detective program titled “Solve the Mystery of your Family’s History: What I learned from Nancy Drew.” The short program is on the “Indexing Project of the LSD Church” by Laurie Massey. GVR Camera Club will begin its 2009 edition of its 10 week Photography Course. The classes are taught at three different times and are held in the new Camera Club facility on the second floor of the GVR Recreation Village at Santa Rita Springs, 921 West Via Rio Fuerte. Classes are Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 9:30 a.m.. You must be a member of GVR and the Camera Club to enroll. Jan. 16

Green Valley Townhouse Assn. 1,2, and 5 annual meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. at East Center. All members urged to attend so that a quorum can be met.

Green Valley Travel Club meets at 9 a.m. at Las Campanas’ Ironwood Room. Don and Janet Skirrow will describe Kashmire and Amritsar, significant regions of Northern India. All GVR members welcome. Club membership required after one guest meeting. Dues: $7 a year.

The Vermont Club will have a potluck supper at La Posada’s rec center. Refreshments, appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by supper. Mary Jane Goodrick, manager of the Community Food Bank, will speak. The Santa Rita Democrats will meet at the Community Performing Arts Center, 1250 W. Continental Road. The meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a brief social period and light refreshments. Guest speaker will be Russell Lowes, research director of SafeEnergy, who will present a common sense view of nuclear energy and its alternatives. The meeting is free and open to the public. Food and other donations for the Green Valley Food Bank will be accepted at this meeting.

Border Issues study group of American Association of University Women will be the Border Issues Fair, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 17750 S. La Canada, Sahuarita. Green Valley - Sahuarita Scooter Club will have its monthly feature ride, meeting in front of Trivetti’s in Continental Shopping Plaza, at 10 a.m. Ride will be to the Cow Palace in Amado for breakfast. The Tubac Tuesday Morning Breakfast Forum presents Mary Mackenzie, co-director, AZ4NORML, speaking on “The Case for the End of Marijuana Prohibition.” Forum meets at at 8 a.m. at Plaza de Anza - Artist’s Palate Restaurant, 40 Avenida Goya, Tubac. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 398-3333 for $10 or for $12 at the door.

Jan. 21

Eastern States Club, formerly the Tri-State Club, meets at 5 p.m. at West Center. Welcome are all GVR members who live or have lived in states east of the Mississippi River excepting Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Michigan as they are served by other GVR clubs. BYOB (set-ups provided) social hour followed by a catered roast beef dinner. Entertainment by U of A Encore Group. Reservations due by Jan. 15. Jan. 24

Entertainment will be University of Arizona Encore presenting Cole Porter songs. Cost for food and entertainment is $18.50 for members and $21 for guests. Annual membership dues are $5.
