Jan. 7

The Santa Rita Art League will hold it’s monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. in the East Center Auditorium. Deanna Thibault will be showing her use of mixed media on canvas and ampersand. Deanna’s work ranges from Impressionism to Abstraction and is always full of color, design and patterns. On Jan. 14,15 and 16, Deanna will teach a workshop called “Capture The Essence Of Your Photos”, at the SRAL Studio, located at the Santa Rita Recreation Center. Green Valley Arts and Crafts Assn. meets at 1 p.m. at Desert Hills Auditorium. Yvonne Steinering from the Green Valley Spinners and Weavers will give the program. Refreshments will be served after the program. Members share an interest in arts and crafts and participate in several community service projects. Membership is open to all GVR members. Green Valley Forum meets at 10 a.m. at East Center. Kelvin Kent will show slides about the history, religion and current situation of Tibet. All GVR members and their eligible guests welcome.

Tucson Chapter of Brandeis National Committee will have its annual University on Wheels at 9:30 a.m. at Skyline Country Club in Tucson. Fibromyalgia Support Group meets at 12:15 p.m. for a brown bag lunch at Friends in Deed, 301 Camino Casa Verde. At 1 p.m., Dr. Gregory K. Peisten, DC, of Tucson, will speak. He is the author of “Fibromyalgia, Chronic, Fatigue, and Irritable Bowel.” Information: Marjorie Palm, 648-3714.

Patagonia Women’s Club is inviting the public to hear speaker Steve Ritter, a retired physician who lives in Sonoita. His topic will be the history and development of the Winchester Rifle which laid the foundation for repeating lever action firearms in the early 1800s. He will speak at 2 p.m. at Cady Hall, 342 Duquesne Ave, next to the Patagonia Library. The club will have a meeting at 1 p.m. for members and refreshments will be served before the program.

Jan. 9

The Aero Club of Arizona will meet at Friends In Deed, 301 Camino Casa Verde. Coffee and donuts at 9:30 a.m., meeting at 10. Speaker will be Bernard (Bud) Stanley, a former member of the Canadian RCAF where he was a pilot and test pilot. Bud also spent seven years in the Arctic. Members are encouraged to attend and hear of Bud’s experiences, and guests are welcome.

League of Women Voters meet at 11:30 a.m. at La Vista’s Madera Room at La Posada. There will be a film on water problems of the Southwest. Bring a sack lunch or order a sandwich for $5 from Ermaline Hannum,, 625-1711, by Jan. 7.

Jan. 10

Free Vehicle Identification Number etched on car’s windshield will be available from the Sheriff’s Auxiliary Volunteers from noon to 3 p.m. at the SAV Garage. No appointment necessary. Call 351-6744 for more information.

Tucson Community for Change will be hosting a fundraiser concert and community day from 5 p.m. until midnight at the Z Mansion, 288 N. Church Ave., Tucson. Cost: $30. There will be live bands, a dance group, poetry reading, wine and appetizers. The fundraiser pays for an open-to-the public, Presidential Inaugural Ball to be held later this month with free admission to those who bring contributions to the Community Food Bank. Jan. 12

Rose Society meets at 9 a.m. in the Community Rose Garden for the annual pruning. Coffee and donuts in the Art Room at the East Center. At 10 a.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, members of the GV Chamber Music Society will perform music by Handel, Scharwenka, Telemann, and Dvorak. The program is free and open to the public. Performers will be Betty Maurstad, soprano; Michael Finkelstein, piccolo, trumpet; Tom Hanselmann, ‘cello; Mary Lonsdale Baker, piano; Cal Turner, clarinet; Anneke Mattson, piano, Marya Giesy, violin; and Esther Siebold, piano.

The Vermont Club will have a potluck supper at La Posada’s rec center. Refreshments, appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by supper. Mary Jane Goodrick, manager of the Community Food Bank, will speak. Jan. 17

The Santa Rita Democrats will meet at the Community Performing Arts Center, 1250 W Continental Road. The meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a brief social period and light refreshments. Guest speaker will be Russell Lowes, research director of SafeEnergy, who will present a common sense view of nuclear energy and its alternatives. He will discuss the various aspects of nuclear energy, review how we got into our current energy state and compare the costs of various energy sources. The meeting is free and open to the public. Food and other donations for the Green Valley Food Bank will be accepted at this meeting.

Jan. 19

The Green Valley Desert Gardeners will present University of Arizona Professor Robert Scarborough at 1:30 p.m. at La Posada recreation Center. A recognized expert in the Basin and Range geologic formations of our area, he has published numerous papers on the volcanic, plutonic and sedimentary formations as well as the uranium favorability of these formations. The public is invited to his talk/slide show about our mountains and valley. For additional information, call 393-1649.

Jan. 20

Kappa Kappa Gammas will have a lunch at 11:30 a.m. at Solaris banquet room. Storyteller Dinghy Sharp will provide tales of women’s accomplishments. All Kappas in the area are welcome. Information: Jane Bryant, 207-2277.

Jan. 21

The Iowa Club will host a pot-luck for all GVR members and their guests at the Desert Hills Center. Members are reminded to bring their GVR cards, passes for guests and favorite beverage. Set-ups will be provided. Doors open at 5 p.m. Social hour and short business meeting will be followed by dinner at 6 p.m. After dinner, “Broadway to Branson” with Suzanne and Paul. Eastern States Club, formerly the Tri-State Club, meets at 5 p.m. at West Center. Welcome are all GVR members who live or have lived in states east of the Mississippi River excepting Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Michigan as they are served by other GVR clubs. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Arizona/’Green Valley invites current and prospective members to a “Getting to know OLLI” annual meeting at 2 p.m. at the Joyner-Green Valley Library.
