Remember when President Bush encouraged Americans to own their own homes?

What followed was financial institutions getting heavily involved in risky situations, deregulation abounded, and Americans could take ownership of a home on not much more than a signature.

The housing market collapsed and untold numbers of new homeowners had the rug jerked out from under them as foreclosures skyrocketed.
