Permanent checkpoint

Rep. Giffords was elected running against a person whose platform was rabidly anti-immigrant. Many people were disappointed during the early part of her term because she appeared to be totally supporting the Border Patrol in whatever it wanted.

Now, with the Border Patrol’s drive to build a permanent checkpoint on I-19, she has shown herself to be quite “sly like a fox.” She has requested that a permanent checkpoint not be constructed until the General Accounting Office study has been completed to determine whether checkpoints are effective.

At the earliest, this will be the end of 2009. Unless the Department of Homeland Security and Border Patrol run roughshod over her request, a permanent checkpoint will wait until the study is completed.

With a new administration with a philosophy based on hope rather than fear, we might expect the Homeland Security Department to be reigned in. This may allow for a reasonable guest worker program and stop the violations of personal and property rights that are occurring,
