Foul play not suspected in 4-day-old’s death

The autopsy report for a newborn Sahuarita baby that died Wednesday morning has come back as inconclusive, but authorities do not suspect foul play, a Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said Friday.

Homicide detectives were called out to investigate the incident because the baby had been otherwise healthy, said Deputy Dawn Barkman, a Sheriff’s Department spokesperson.

Authorities suspect the death was either accidental or the result of natural causes. Toxicology reports are still pending, Barkman said.

The baby has been identified as four-day-old Lysandra Laine.

Larissa Laine, 32, told deputies she had been breast-feeding the infant when she and the baby fell asleep, said Sheriff’s Lt. Michael O’Connor. She told him she had been sitting on a bed, propped against a wall, and was in the same position when she woke up less than an hour later to find that the baby was not breathing.

Lysandra’s grandmother called 911 while the mother performed CPR on the infant. When deputies arrived at the home in the 6600 block of West Maverick Road around 5:30 a.m., medical crews were already working on the baby girl.

Lysandra was flown to a Tucson hospital where she was pronounced dead at 6:42 a.m.
