ColumnsLast week, we discussed some of the inroads and spread of the primordial undifferentiated foreign cells into the different tissues of our body we call cancer. We alluded to the fact that our medical establishment does not get particularly alarmed until these renegades become organized into a mass forming what we call a malignant tumor. All medical attention is directed to the removal of that tumor wherever it may be and destroying any evidence of possible spread we call metastasis. There is good evidence that from time to time through life, cells that we assume are healthy mutate and become renegades that have only one goal in mind — to multiply at the expense of the surrounding tissue. When we are younger, and our immune systems and enzyme output of our pancreas and other organs of our body are strong and healthy, most of us are capable of destroying these biologically primordial acting cells. This allows the healthy cells to go on about their business in a cooperative natural “all for one and one for all.” As we get older (for some of us, that does not seem that old), we begin to fail to stay on top of handling the challenge of constantly eradicating these cancerous forming cells. We know that a poorly functioning immune system, nutritional deficiency and organ overload because of hormonal imbalance, emotional stress and environmental toxic surroundings, can be a big factor. We know that removing the cancerous formed mass does not make the whole stronger. It does not correct the underlying deficiency that allowed the mass to form in the first place. In fact, the means we use to remove the cancerous tumor and destroy some of the spread throws a tremendous stress on the healthy overloaded portion of the body. When a cancerous tumor has formed, it has an opportunity to build a wall around itself to protect it from the immune system. It can build new blood vessels into the tumor for nourishment and prepare itself for the opportunity for spread. This takes nourishment from the healthy cells of the body, including the immune system. A tumor must be removed or destroyed in a way that is as kind as possible to the healthy tissue. The healthy tissue must be addressed, including the immune system. If this is not done, sooner or later the cancerous cells will grow and form another tumor. I cannot help but think of this as a massive job. The necessity of coordinating the trillions of cells that make up this human body and the communication required to fulfill the requirements of each organ of the body is mind boggling. All of this is done so that we may be able to relate to the world around us in one form or another. I happen to notice on the back of a dollar bill there is a profound biological truth. The eagle is holding a ribbon which is inscribed “E Pluribus Unum,” meaning out of or the use of many to form one. We cannot through surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy destroy many cells for the sake of one organ. The health of the whole is required to save the whole. There is increasing research going on during the past 20 years. Today, we can now see the interconnection between all of the cells of the body, not only in communication, but in individual cell requirements, such as mineral and electrolyte requirements and protein and fat nutrients above and beyond our vascular system circulation. Many of these other forms of communication are controlled by the pH of the body, glycemic food load, and the chloride of sodium chloride which is salt. By the way, we do not get our excess salt from the salt shaker, but from the way the foods are prepared before we purchase them, whether from a restaurant or the grocery store. Whether a particular food substance is good or bad for us does not necessarily come from what it is but what our bodies do with it after we eat it. There are ways of monitoring much of this. The amount of worry and inner stress we are dealing with plays a big role. Are you truly happy or are you just pretending? Any excess stress and poor nutritional intake will influence intercellular communication. Your nutrition may be fine, but are some cells of the body getting all they want while others are starving? Equality throughout these trillions of cells is a must or they will react as in a country made up of rich and poor. The last but not least is movement. Movement carries nutrients essentially to where they are needed and byproducts out before they poison the incoming nutrients. I am talking about this at intracellular levels, not before you eat it. Next discussion will be more specific as to healthy cell needs, particularly cellular nutrition and body movement. None of this is simple, if it was we would all be doing the right thing. I would be happy to talk to small or large groups if there would be interest at any time. Prepare for good holidays and God bless until next time. Contact Dr. DeWall J.
