RUETH McCARTNEY ENGLISH passed away Nov. 14, 2008,

at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson after a 36-year battle with MS.

She was born Sept. 22, 1931, in Hillside, N.J. to George A. and Myrtle (Veit) McCartney. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by Richard E. English, her husband of 25 years; stepsons John (Connie) English of Richmond, Texas, Brian (Margie) English of Kina, Idaho and Barry (Dr. Candace) English of Atlanta, Ga.; stepdaughter Jo (William C. Jr.) Spahr of Newburgh, N.Y.; as well as grandchildren James F. (Joanna) English of Champaign, Ill., Katherine English (Jeffrey) Daniels of Missouri City, Texas, Thomas M. Spahr of Newburgh and David Lash of Huntsville, Ala.

Rueth formerly lived in Denville, N.J. before moving to Green Valley 19 years ago. She was a teacher of Spanish for the Bernards Township, N.J. school system for 33 years, served as department head and was awarded merit pay for her excellence. She also served as state secretary and committee person for FLENJ, the Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey.

Rueth attended Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and graduated from Gettysburg College, also in Pennsylvania, majoring in Spanish. She earned a masters degree in Spanish from New York University. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to attend Madrid University in Spain for a year. She also studied at the University of Quito, Ecuador and at the University of Mexico City, Mexico.

Rueth was a dedicated and talented teacher who loved the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.

Rev. John Dunham of Valley Presbyterian Church conducted services for her at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008.
