ROBERT E. LUND passed away on Nov. 11, 2008,

at Hospice Family Care in Tucson. He was born on June 6, 1920, in Roswell, N.M., the son of Robert R. and Eunice B. Lund.

Bob graduated from the University of Colorado in 1942, with a degree in chemical engineering. He joined St. Joe Minerals Corp. in Monaca, Pa. and spent his entire professional career of 39 years with St. Joe. He served in U.S. Navy from 1944-46 as a radar maintenance officer. He retired from St. Joe in 1981 as Director of Extractive Research & Development.

Recognized for his work in the fields of extractive and process metallurgy, he authored a number of technical articles describing various aspects of the electrothermic production of zinc, recovery of by-products, and recovery of metals from complex ores. An active member of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), Bob served on the Board of Directors for five years and was president of the Metallurgical Society (TMS) in 1977.

The American Society for Metals and the Metallurgical Society both elected him to the Grade of Fellow. In 1988, the AIME awarded him the James Douglas Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Nonferrous Metallurgy.

Bob married June Anderson in November 1947. They lived in Beaver, Pa. and upon retirement in 1981, bought a home in Green Valley. They have enjoyed full-time residency since 1986.

Bob was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church and a very active member of the Green Valley Hiking club, serving as Hike Master in 1989-91, President in 1991-92 and Hike Leader since 1987. He received his 4500 mile patch in July 2006. He was a member of the GVR Lapidary Club and served in various capacities on the Board of the Desert Hills VI Home Owners Assoc.


Survivors include his wife June; four children: daughters Susan Collins and Amy Storer and sons Mike and Steve; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will held at Valley Presbyterian Church at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Valley Presbyterian Church.
