VIRGINIA H. DAVIS, 93,

Published: Saturday, November 15, 2008 6:59 PM MST

mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, died on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008.

She was the first child of John Quincy and Hester Masters. Virginia was born in Rocky Ford, Colo. on April 3, 1915 and was later joined by four sisters June, Sally, Betty and Rowena. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard L. Davis, on June 27, 1935. She helped him through medical school by working at Marshall Fields department store in Chicago, Ill.

They returned to La Junta, Colo. in 1941, where she helped her husband begin his medical practice. They were married for 64 years and she enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her two daughters Janet and Jean. She was dedicated to her many volunteer activities.

As a volunteer to the Arkansas Valley Regional Medical Center, she helped start the first blood bank program. Virginia was a Girl Scout leader and was honored for her service by the Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of the La Junta Methodist Church, Tuesday Literary Club, Hospital Auxiliary, and enjoyed 54 years as a P. E.O. Sister in Chapter W in La Junta and Chapter DI in Green Valley. She enjoyed her two bridge clubs and was a bowler and an avid golfer; she had a hole-in-one at the La Junta Golf Club and played in many golf tournaments in Colorado and New Mexico with her friends and with her sisters June and Betty. She enjoyed all sports and especially the Denver Broncos.

She often mentioned that she was fortunate that her daughter Jean and family lived in La Junta and she could enjoy her grandchildren every day. Robby, Ryan and Kristy would stop by “Grandma’s” for cookies on their way home from school. She lived in La Junta until June 1994, when she and her husband moved to Denver to be with her daughter Janet and son-in-law, Merritt, because of health reasons.

In March 2003, she moved to Green Valley and became an affiliate member of the Valley Presbyterian Church. During her five-and-a-half years in Green Valley, she was known as “Mom” to many friends. She enjoyed going to church and brunch with Phyllis McDonough, her longtime friend of 54 years; going out to dinner, especially at the Cow Palace and the Grill at Quail Creek; and visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was honored to have a great-granddaughter named after her, Jacqueline Virginia Kent.

She is survived by her three sisters Sally Lindeman of Aurora, Colo., Betty Will of La Mirada, Calif., and Rowena Anderson of Farmington, N.M. She leaves behind Janet and Merritt Howard and Jean (Bernard) Rickman-Place; her grandchildren Carol (Ron) Kent, Cheryl (Mark) Aberle, Rich (Shelly) Howard and Kristy (John) Sinks; her great-grandchildren Katherine and Jacqueline Virginia Kent of Huntington Beach, Calif., Nick and Matt Aberle of Superior, Colo., Drew, Monique and Tristan Sinks of Pueblo, Colo., and Trevor and Alex Howard of Littleton, Colo.; as well as her son-in-law Ricky Rickman, plus many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Richard Davis; two grandchildren Robby and Ryan Rickman; and her sister June Waters.

A memorial service was held Nov. 9 at Valley Presbyterian Church. In the spring, a second service will be held in her hometown of La Junta, Colo. Donations may be made to Colorado Boys Ranch, La Junta, Colorado 81050.
