A stolen car that was set on fire in Sahuarita last week turns out to have belonged to a Rural Metro firefighter.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Pima County Sheriff’s officers responded to a report of a burning vehicle.

A 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse was found on a dirt road, south of the intersection of Country Club Road and Santa Rita Road, engulfed in flames, reports said.

When Rural Metro firefighters arrived to put out the fire, one firefighter noticed that the vehicle looked similar to his co-worker’s Eclipse, which had been stolen out of Oro Valley the night before. When the firefighter arrived on scene, he confirmed that the vehicle did belong to him, reports said.

Officers determined that the car was used for smuggling, because the front and back seats and also the dashboard had been removed. A cinder block was found near the driver’s side of the vehicle, used as a seat for whoever was driving it, reports said.

Officers took photos of shoe prints and and tire marks leading away from the Eclipse, reports said.

  • Pima County Animal Control officers have cited a Sahuarita woman for animal cruelty, Pima County Sheriff’s reports said.

Rachel Lyn Potter, 20, was charged with several counts of neglect and allowing animal waste to accumulate on private property.

On Thursday night, Sheriff’s officers arrived at Potters’s property in the 16000 block of Santa Rita Road in response to another call, and found a puppy in a cage with no food or water. The report says the puppy was “shivering” from the cold.

Another dog was found in a pen in the back yard, also with no food and no water, covered in feces, the report said.

The Sheriff’s Department contacted Pima County Animal Control, which issued the citation and took the animals, reports said.

  • Green Valley Health Food store was broken into last week, though the mode of entry differs from that of the several recent business burglaries in the area.

On Nov. 8, the owner of a neighboring business called the Pima County Sheriff’s Department to report that the front glass door of Green Valley Health Food, 125 W. Calle de las Tiendas, was shattered.

When officers arrived, they found that a large rock was used to break the glass and allow the suspect to gain entry into the store.

Several filing cabinets had been damaged and rummaged through, and the cash register was opened, but store owners confirmed that no money was taken.

In October, the nearby Old Time Butcher shop was burglarized, one of several Green Valley businesses have been broken into since September. In each of those cases, the suspect gained entry through picking the locks and then re-locking the doors.
