passed away peacefully on Oct. 30, 2008, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Thomas H. Dougan was born in Byron, Okla., on May 21, 1939, the youngest of six children, delivered at home by his grandfather, Dr. Archibald Dougan.
Tom’s military service began in his teens and included active duty in both the U.S. Navy and the Air Force. He served on the Midway and the Lexington aircraft carriers where he worked on radio equipment in fighter jets. In the Air Force, he was a radar technician, where he was stationed in North Dakota.
Tom continued his technical training at the Oregon Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in machining, tool and die making and gun smithing. He then went on to work for many years as a tool and die maker.
When Tom retired in 2002, he and Sue moved from Klamath Falls, Ore. to Green Valley. They began volunteering at The Animal League, and there they found a new loving family, not only with the volunteers, but also with the many “Attic” thrift store shoppers that Tom befriended over the years. These people meant more to him than they realized.
Tom will always be remembered for his kind manner, his great intellect, quick wit, and his wealth of knowledge. He was a wonderful and caring husband and father.
In addition to his loving wife Sue, Tom is survived by two sons, Mark (Stacy) Fleming of Orange, Calif., and Ed (Heather) Fleming of Roy, Wash.; grandsons Mark, Sol and Tommy; granddaughter Ivy; sister Dixie Cooper and her husband Gene, who was like a father to Tom, of Havre, Mont.; brother and sister-in-law Joe and Cindy Hovis of Gold Hill, Ore.; nephew Mike Aquilino of Green Valley; nieces Kenna (Ben) Ruiz and Debbie Hunt of Tucson, Sherry (Darryl) Chevalier of Washington, and Tina Mclntosh of Nevada; several grand-nieces and nephews; and the dogs that he loved, Billy, Meg, and McBee.
Tom was deeply loved and will live forever in our hearts.
A celebration of his life may be scheduled at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made in Tom’s honor to The Animal League of Green Valley, 1600 W. Duval Mine Road, Green Valley, AZ 85614.
