LettersEditor: The writer of the letter about Acorn registering fraudulent Democratic voters nation-wide is not quite accurate. First, Acorn is a community organization whose chief purpose is to register poor and normally overlooked persons who should have the right to vote but often do not know how or where to register, for whatever reason. Acorn is funded by political parties and does not necessarily slant or skew the registrant’s party preference. The weak part of the Acorn process is the organization hires persons who are out of work, a bit down and out and pays these canvassers by the name registered. As one can surmise, some of these hired canvassers cheat and make up names for which they are paid or hope to be paid. But in so doing, there is no voter fraud committed. Voter fraud happens if someone actually votes fraudulently. But the burden of checking the names submitted is first, Acorn’s and this organization has regularly rejected phony names (Dallas Coyboys roster, Mickey Mouse, etc.) and then the particular election board must verify the new registrant. It is true that during the primary campaign the Obama people donated money to Acorn. But so did his opponents and also Republican money went to similar organizations, in an effort to add voters to the rolls. As far as the “liberal press” burying such stories, not so. The New York Times, often referred to as the paragon of the liberal press just this week had extensive coverage on Acorn and its efforts to stem any irregularities. And Barack Obama did represent Acorn sometime in the past, before he became a U.S. senator, in a lawsuit and won. But the writer has also neglected to mention that the recent investigation in the firing of several US prosecutors was for their refusal to prosecute efforts of groups such as Acorn in New Mexico. David Inglesias, one of the fired prosecutors, has testified to this very fact in New Mexico before Congress; and the Justice Department has been repremanded. But to say that there has been voter fraud when there has yet to be an election is far-fetched. The writer should be more interested that Gov. Sarah Palin can’t even correctly answer a third grade question about the duties of the vice president. David J. Davin, Green Valley
