An act of fear

Published: Saturday, November 1, 2008 8:15 PM MST

Editor:

There must be some fearful Republicans loose in our community. For the second time I have had a political sign stolen from my yard. Yesterday, it was the Obama/Biden sign that was taken.

I understand why Republicans fear losing the election for president, but it is a sad day when their fear translates into undermining a basic tenet of our democracy.

Our country is strong and vibrant only when we respect one another when we hold and publicly express political choices.

I was in Mississippi in 1964 to support a group of people in their constitutional right to vote which had been denied to them by fear and prejudice.

Winston Churchill was right when he said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except all others.”

Democracy is undermined through act of intimidation of fear.

As a democracy, our strength is in our diversity, not in an imposed homogeneity.

In Europe in 1944 and 1945, as a part of General Patton’s Third Army, we did not question another about our political or religious affiliation.

We were together in common cause to preserve democracy.

I am saddened when anyone in our community, through fear, assaults our basic democratic right to freely express our differing political opinions.
