Guest Comment: Keep our dollars hereAs a local business owner for the past 13 years, I know the importance of keeping what little revenue exists here, in the Green Valley/ Sahuarita areas in these difficult times. From the Editor : Swastikas, flags and talk radioNot long after I arrived here I attended a Holocaust Memorial service at Beth Shalom Temple Center in Green Valley. The O’Reilly Factor: Visitors to the White House — a fascinating listThe day before Halloween, the White House released a partial list of visitors since Jan. 20 of this year. The list is fascinating and highlights exactly what kind of house the Obamas are running. The Old Scout: As we all learn, life is just a variety packIt costs $722 to fly from St. Paul/Minneapolis to Bismarck, N.D., and you can fly from St. Paul/Minneapolis to Paris for $754. Life is unfair; we all know this. Big prizes go to mediocrities while you struggle on, unappreciated. The righteous suffer while the wicked prosper. November 4th, 2009 Politics and Punditry: The president takes the Dover testFormer U.S. Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio, who as a Marine pilot had flown 59 combat missions during World War II and an additional 90 missions in Korea — where in air-to-air combat during that war’s last nine days, alone, he had shot down three Soviet MiG fighter planes — knew firsthand the suffering of war. From the Editor : Looking for something to do?I’ve read countless “reader surveys” over the years and it almost never fails that the top two subjects you want covered in your newspaper are public safety and “things to do.” Guest Comment: The vanishing Christians of IraqIraq mirrors the problems facing Christians in many Muslim nations. Guest Comment: Obama’s transparency is shrouded in secrecyCandidate Obama promised an unprecedented degree of openness and transparency, in contrast to the notoriously secretive Bush White House. Give Mea Break: Self-governance worksMuch of what government does is based on the premise that people can’t do things for themselves. So government must do it for them. More often than not, the result is a ham-handed, bumbling, one-size-fits-all approach that leaves the intended beneficiaries worse off. Of course, this resulting failure is never blamed on the political approach -- on the contrary, failure is taken to mean the government solution was not extravagant enough. October 31st, 2009 The O’Reilly Factor: Getting radical—somewhat out of step with mainstream AmericaIn the beginning, there was Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a fire-breathing Chicago preacher who believes America is a bad place. The Reverend and Barack Obama were friends for 20 years. Compassionate Conservatism: In Virginia and the White House, a degree of smallnessR. Creigh Deeds, the Democratic candidate for Virginia governor, seems poised to lose the jewel in President Obama’s political crown. The Old Scout: When the tough should really get goingThe former Marine officer Matthew Hoh, who resigned his Foreign Service post in Afghanistan because he feels the war is pointless and not worth dying for, deserves all the attention he’s gotten and more. I counsel people with dog behavioral issues, teach obedience classes, and run a doggie day care center. Guest Comment: Get the facts straight on waterAccording to ADWR, Farmers Investment Co. pumped 30,541 acre-feet of groundwater in 2008. FICO has been pumping groundwater in this range for decades for its pecan groves. FICO is also under no legal obligation to replace its agricultural groundwater pumping with CAP water. Guest Comment: Proof socialism still doesn’t workThe disdainful attitude of Samaya Jones towards seniors and teabaggers in her “Open Letter to Our Seniors” (Guest Comment, Oct. 25) is both disgusting and disingenuous. Politics and Punditry--Politics: A matter of addition, not subtractionSome of my more disapproving colleagues in the press corps regularly remind the rest of us that there is only one way to look at any politician: down! We nearly lost her. October 24th, 2009 The O’Reilly Factor: Fighting the good fightPresident Obama should fire White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and hire me as his top adviser. Don’t laugh. I can almost guarantee higher poll numbers for the president if he brings me on board. Guest Comment: Domestic violence month a time to deal with realityAs of Oct. 15, there have been 91 domestic violence-related deaths in Arizona in 2009. These deaths are/were preventable. Our own local rural community accounts for two of those deaths and at least 10 others in Pima County. That means more than 10 percent of the domestic violence-related deaths were our neighbors.
