What’s Happening

Effective Nov. 1, What’s Happening will appear in both editions. Deadlines will be: FRIDAY for Wednesday; WEDNESDAY for Sunday.

Oct. 29

The Valley Gourd Patch will meet at 6 p.m. at Casa Esperanza Community Center, 780 S. Park Centre. Visitors welcome. Please bring a gourd you have made for show and tell. There will be a demonstration on attaching botanical materials to gourds. Information: Diane Westl, 625-4488.

Sonora Desert Scribes will meet at 1:30 p.m. at the La Posada Recreation Building. Elsie Schalock will talk about her experience at Ghost Ranch this year, and Paula Bowman will teach how to create whimsical crayon rubbings. Attendees should bring several sheets of typing paper, scissors, a couple of gel pens or felt tip markers, and crayons if they have them. Information: Elsie Schalock at 393-6585.

Green Valley Forum meets at 10 a.m. at East Center. Don Honnas will relate his experiences on a Southern Arizona cattle ranch. All GVR members and their local guests welcome.

Oct. 30

Oct. 31

Peerless Pawn Pushers play chess from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Villas East Recreation Hall, 508-A South Paseo Cerro (in the same building as the office). Chess players of all skill levels are welcome and you do NOT have to belong to GVR. If you are a beginner, we’ll teach you. If you are an expert, you can teach us! Questions? Villas West in the Park will have a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Paseo Penasco and Paseo Tierra. Come stroll the park and meet the crafters who will be presenting handmade items. Children’s books, paintings, baked goods, much more.

Rose Society of Green Valley presents its annual show, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the East Center. Open to the public. Roses, raffle boutique, refreshments and entertainment.

Santa Cruz Valley Chapter of the Society of Southwestern Authors meets at 1 p.m. at the Joyner-Green Valley Library. Corky Simpson, award-winning sports writer and and Green Valley News columnist, will speak.

Rose Society of Green Valley meets at 6:30 p.m at the East Center. Walt and Diane Kilmer of the San Diego Rose Society will speak on the roses of New Zealand with pictures of rare 16th century roses. Information: Karen Packer, 777-5624.

Fishing and Hunting Club meets at 9:30 a.m. at Friends in Deed, 301 Camino Casa Verde. Residents of Sahguarita, Quail Creek and other nearby non-GVR locations welcome. Green Valley Rotary Club meets at 11:45 a.m. at St. Frances-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church, 600 S. La Canada Dr., GV. Debbie Walls, of Sahuarita, will tell Rotarians about a recent visit to Japan she and her husband received as a gift of the parents of a Rotary Foreign Exchange student the Walls hosted five years ago. Nov. 6

Michigan Club will host its first catered dinner meeting of the season at West Center, Social hour, 5 p.m. dinner at 6. Entertainment will be a Picture Travelogue presented by the Green Valley Camera Club. All current and former Michiganians who are GVR members and their guests are welcome, with membership cards required at the meeting. Reservations by Nov. 1. Green Valley Women’s Club luncheon will be a noon at West Center. The husband and wife group, Green Velvet, will be singing following the luncheon. Cost $12. The Dixie Cats Jazz Band featuring New Orleans’ style jazz, gospel, blues and stomps will be performing at Casa de Esperanza’s November 9, Concert in the Courtyard. Advance tickets on sale now at Meredith’s Hallmark Shop. For more information call Casa: 625-2273.
