‘ALIENS’ INVADE TOWN HALL

Jaime Richardson | Green Valley News
Green Valley firefighter Rob Meyer and former firefighter Jim Watts are seen here at Fire Station 153 preparing for the fire district’s annual Halloween Safehouse. The men, decked out in ghoulish gear from the classic science fiction movie “Alien,” spent months creating scary costumes and helping to organize the popular local event, set to be held Thursday and Friday at the Sahuarita Town Hall.

The Sahuarita Town Hall will soon be transformed into a Halloween carnival full of fun for the whole family.

The Green Valley Fire District is hosting its sixteenth annual Halloween Safehouse from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, and Friday, Oct. 31, at the Sahuarita Municipal Complex, 375 W. Sahuarita Center Way.

The event, designed to provide a safe and fun alternative to trick-or-treating, will feature carnival games, a haunted house, costume contests and a new attraction — a ride called “Escape From Alien Nation.”

Green Valley Fire is sponsoring the event along with the Town of Sahuarita, Sahuarita Team Offers Prevention (STOP) and members of Sahuarita High School’s Student Teen Advisory Council.

It’s the first time the Safehouse will be held in Sahuarita, said GVFD spokesperson Capt. Melissa Smith. The new location has allowed organizers to expand the event, traditionally held at Fire Station 151 on La Canada Drive.

“We had 1,500 kids come through the Safehouse last year, but we’re hoping we’ll get even more kids this year by holding it at the Town Hall,” she said.

The upcoming carnival is bigger and better than any Safehouse they’ve hosted before, said Smith, and will feature more games for older kids, including a “firefighter challenge” and a basketball free-throw, with candy and toys given out as prizes.

Kids can then take a trailer-ride through an alien battleground featuring creepy creatures from the movie “Alien,” before trekking through the haunted house.

Other Halloween activities include a free screening of the movie “Edward Scissorhands” at Anza Trail Park, located next to the elementary school on Ranch Sahuarita Boulevard. The screening, sponsored by STOP, is set for 9:30 p.m. on Friday, said Smith.
