Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has opened an office in Green Valley.

Thrivent, a not-for-profit Fortune 500 company that offers financial services to over 3 million people nationwide, formed in 2002 with the merging of Lutheran Brotherhood and Aid Association for Lutherans. Though the company is primarily faith-based, clients are not required to have an affiliation with a Lutheran church.

Galen Johnson, financial associate at the Green Valley office, says Thrivent offers a broad range of financial products and services, including life insurance, annuities, mutual funds and disability income insurance.

Johnson says one of his priorities is helping people financially plan for their retirement.

“A big concern for a lot of folks is that they’ll outlive their money,” Johnson said. “I’d like to help them prevent that from happening.”

Johnson and his wife Anne moved to Quail Creek earlier this year from Nebraska, where Johnson was a CFA with the Omaha insurance company Berkshire Hathaway. He began work at the new Thrivent office, 512 E. White House Canyon Road, Ste 130, in the Madera Plaza, in June.

In the past, associates at Thrivent offices in Tucson have serviced the Green Valley area, he said.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, as a fraternal, not-for-profit organization, sponsors national outreach programs and activities that support congregations, schools, charitable organizations and individuals in need.

Thrivent gives back to the community what it would have paid in corporate income taxes, said Johnson, who plans to work with the three local Lutheran churches — Desert Hills Lutheran, Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church and Lutheran Church of the Risen Savior — on future fundraising projects.

Even with no local office, Thrivent has been an active organization in the community, donating more than $5,000 to Green Valley charitable organizations in December, and in November, donating more than 60 Thanksgiving turkey’s to the Green Valley Community Food Bank.

Thrivent Financial For Lutherans in the Madera Plaza is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Evening and weekend appointments are also available.
