Continental School District’s band program has been awarded a $2,000 grant that will fund 40 hours of personalized music lessons from members of the Tucson Chamber Orchestra.

The contribution was made by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, which approved more than $4 million in matching grants to schools and community organizations throughout the state for the 2008-09 fiscal year.

Sahuarita Unified School District also received grant money, including $3,260 to its Visual Arts and Cultural Studies program and $2,000 to the Sahuarita High School Band.

Grants also went to the Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson Children’s Museum, 11 TUSD elementary and middle schools and several other community organizations, such as the Tucson Guitar Society, Jazz Society, and Junior Strings Society.

Dan Lambertson, band instructor at Continental, says he’s coordinating with the Tucson Chamber Orchestra and hopes to begin the musical instruction before the end of the year.
