Joyful Noise Academy is music to the ears

The Joyful Noise Academy at Valley Presbyterian Church will be offering children a chance to explore the realms of expression, imagination and creation through music, in Green Valley this fall.

Classes will be held weekly on Monday afternoons from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the following days: Sept. 22 and 29; Oct.

6, 13, 20 and 27; Nov. 3, 10 and 17. All classes will be held at Valley Presbyterian Church, 2800 S. Camino del Sol.

Instruction will be offered in chorus (required for all child students) and one of the following: recorders (purchase for $8), chimes (provided), violin, cello, guitar or brass including trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba and French horn. For these classes, students will bring their own instrument.

All children who register are enrolled in two classes: chorus and one instrumental class. The registration fee is $80. When two children from the same family are enrolled, the total cost due on the first day of classes in $80 ($40 for each student). A second $40 will be collected by Oct. 20 for the first student in a family. No further fees are due for any additional students in a family.

Adults may enroll in one class for a total cost of $40, payable on the first day of class. Classes may require additional costs for music and/or instruction books.


Registration deadline is Sept. 15. Registration forms can be downloaded by going to: www.joyfulnoiseacademygreenvalley.org or e-mail questions to JNA@valleypres.net.

A parent or guardian must accompany the child or children on the first day of classes. At that time, enrollment information will be verified, proof of immunization must be shown, and fees will be collected.

Kay Albrecht is the director and founder of Joyful Noise Academy and Lynne Szabo is administrative assistant.

Albrecht, who will instruct chorus at the academy, taught music in the public schools for 30 years beginning in Pueblo, Colo., then Jefferson County near Denver and finally for Fairfax County, Va. near Washington, D.C.

She received her training at the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, Colo., Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo., and George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. While at Adams State College, Kay studied choral conducting with Dr. Maurice Skones. In 1999, Albrecht became director of music at Valley Presbyterian Church.

Szabo has been involved with children, young people and families most of her life. As a librarian, teacher, counselor and psychotherapist she has worked in education, private practice and the corporate world. She moved to Green Valley in 2003 to take a position with Pima Community College as director of libraries.

Szabo has a master’s degree in library science, organizational development and clinical psychology.

Other instructors in the fall line up include:

  • Marlene Danielson who will teach chimes. She has been involved with church choirs since she was 14 years old. Danielson discovered bells and chimes at a Lutheran church. She is a member of Valley Presbyterian Church’s Sanctuary Choir and the Valley Ringers. She also belongs to the Ariel Bells at St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church directed by Sharlyn Matthews.

  • Ken Garver graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1966 with a bachelor of science in physical education and biology and from the University of Arizona in 1967 with a master’s degree in education. He taught physical education and science in junior high and high school for three years and P.E. and biology for 33 years. Ken retired to Green Valley in 2004.

  • Marya Giesy will teach violin. She played professionally and taught a large private studio in Columbus, Ohio, for many years before moving to Green Valley. She has a bachelor of music degree in performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees from The Ohio State University, where she also taught. She is active in Green Valley as a chamber musician and recitalist, is past program chair of the Green Valley Chamber Music Society, and coaches and plays with the Green Valley String Ensemble.

  • Dan Lambertson will teach the recorder. He is from Seven Mile, Ohio. Dan has a bachelor or arts and a master of music in music education from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He also has the course work complete for his supervisors and principal certificate in education from Xavier University, Cincinnati. Since moving to Green Valley in November 2007, he has enjoyed working with the kids at Continental School.

  • Bob Szabo will teach brass instruments. After graduating from Indiana State Teachers College, now ISU, he taught junior high general music for four years. He late attended graduate school at the Manhattan School of Music. Szabo toured the Soviet Union in 1964 with the New York Pro Musica Renaissance Band. He also performed with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and had a 30-year career with San Jose State University and the San Jose Symphony.
