LettersEditor: I have been a Republican for many years and voted for President Bush. When he declared war on Iraq, I e-mailed his office many times in opposition to his decision to send our troops to invade that country in an unjust declaration of war. That is a feeling which is felt by so many Americans today. America is in chaos because of his tragic mistake to choose war over diplomacy which was never tried or used. Not only was he misinformed about Iraq but he lacked the intellect and wisdom to know that. He had no training or knowledge of the power of diplomacy in foreign affairs. This is why so many countries today dislike us, he was not and is not a statesman and because of that our country is in turmoil, chaos and debt which we are leaving to our beautiful children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The war in Iraq has put us in unheard-of debt and cost the lives of so many innocent Americans and people in Iraq. This war has not solved any of the problems in Iraq because of their own tribal division which they must solve themselves. Only diplomacy and conversation can solve foreign problems. We can also blame our own politicians who voted and gave President Bush the power to attack Iraq. When President Clinton left the White House, we were not in debt as we are today. The American dream has disappeared for so many under the leadership of President Bush. Why was the money spent on the war in Iraq not used here in America to help our own people? Why are our prisons overflowing with inmates costing millions of dollars? Why do we have so many homeless people? Why can’t every child attend college if they want to? Why is health insurance not possible for every American? Why is gas costing Americans $4 a gallon? Why do we allow American jobs to go overseas? Why are pork-barrel bills allowed? Why are our streets so unsafe? Americans will have a choice in November to vote for our next president. May God be with us as we vote for someone who will show the world that we are a nation who takes care of our own people first before trying to solve impossible problems of other countries, May we elect a person who will be known as a true diplomat who seeks peace and solves problems through conversation and diplomacy. May they have the gift of the Holy Spirit. Helen Fankhauser (age 87), Green Valley
