Darnell Shumpert opened some eyes during his stint with the Compton Magic on this summer’s AAU circuit.
He hoped his play would land him a scholarship offer from a four-year university.
Boy, did it ever.
The University of Arizona offered Shumpert a full athletic scholarship on Tuesday, shortly after Phoenix star Matt Carlino committed to Indiana instead of the Wildcats.
The 6-foot-8, 190-pound Shumpert had been considering offers from Saint Mary’s, George Washington, UNLV and the University of Alabama-Birmingham, but jumped at the opportunity to join Lute Olson and the Wildcats.
Shumpert shined for Sahuarita his junior year before transferring to Gila-region rival Santa Rita, helping to lead the Eagles to a conference championship.
Shumpert becomes only the seventh player from the Tucson area to earn a UA scholarship during the Lute Olson tenure and the first in eight years.
