An Arivaca man may face up to 3.75 years in prison for the August 2006 shooting death of another resident.

Parley Edward Nielson, 64, plead no contest Friday to negligent homicide in the death of 41-year-old Donnie Sheets, who was shot to death outside his home near Arivaca Ranch and Hardsrabble roads.

Nielson was indicted for first degree murder in June of 2007.

Deputy Pima County Attorney Mark Diebolt said authorities believe Nielson shot Sheets with a shotgun because Sheets wrote Nielson’s wife an $800 check for tires and rims and the check bounced.

There were no eye witnesses to the shooting and no murder weapon was ever found.

Pima County Superior Court Judge John Leonardo will sentence Nielson Sept. 23.

  • Several burglaries have taken place in Green Valley over the past week, and the culprits are primarily targeting vacant houses, Pima County Sheriff’s reports say.

A house up for sale in the 600 block of Camino Del Poso was found burglarized, Thursday. The front door was kicked-in. The only item missing was a flat-screen television.

A house in the 400 block of East Paseo De Golf, also vacant, was discovered burglarized Wednesday. A desktop computer and DVD player were taken. Police say it appears that the burglar entered through a sliding glass door.

Authorities responded to another burglary in 1800 block of West Camino Del Huarache on Tuesday. The front door had been kicked-in. A Sony stereo was missing, and a television set had been moved from the T.V. stand to the floor, but was not taken.

On Friday, Aug. 17, a home in the 1100 block of North Paseo Maravilloso was discovered burglarized by its owners. The items taken include computer equipment, golf clubs, jewelry and a television.

  • One of the putting greens at Haven Golf Course was damaged after someone drove a pickup truck across it and then abandoned the vehicle, Sheriff’s reports say.

Maintenance workers noticed tire marks on the green Wednesday morning and followed the tracks to an abandoned Ford F-150. The doors of the truck were left open, and nothing was found inside it except empty water bottles, reports say.

Authorities believe the truck was used to transport illegal immigrants.

Repairing damage to the green will cost an estimated $1,000.
