The high gas prices and high summer temperatures haven’t stopped Country Fair White Elephant volunteers from donating their time and energy to the thrift store, whose proceeds helped more than 130 entities last year, including social services, school districts, arts programs, youth organizations, local charities and many others.
Last December, the CFWE handed out $1.4 million and to do this, it took a lot of donations from the community and a lot of helping hands.
In addition, the store depends on shoppers to buy “white elephant” items.
Since its inception nearly 44 years ago, the CFWE has donated back to the community approximately $14,087,892.
This give and take is what makes the White Elephant one of the most popular places to shop in Green Valley.
According to longtime volunteer Nola Scott, who compiled the history of the thrift store going back to its inception in 1964, “the birth and growth of the Country Fair White Elephant have been phenomenal.”
“It is a rewarding experience to be associated with this organization,” Scott write in a CFWE publication. “Such success would not be possible without a very generous community that donates its no-longer needed items, plus the dedication of volunteers putting in many hours.” “The White Elephant helps so many, but we sometimes need a little help, too,” says general manager Karen Morales. “Without volunteers, we never would not be able to operate.” Although the White Elephant boasts approximately 500 volunteers, not all are year-round residents and not all are physically capable of doing the “grunt” work, Morales explains. “We need people who can lift and who are able to load up and empty the trucks,” she says. “It takes many hands to make the White Elephant a success.” “White Elephant volunteers are extremely dedicated. Many have donated their time for more than 15 years, but there is always room for more,” Morales adds. To donate or to volunteer, call 625-4119 or stop by the White Elephant thrift store at 601 N. La Canada for more information. rford@gvnews.com | 547-9740
