Some motorists waved and honked their horns in support, while others scowled and gave thumbs downs.
In both cases, the Barack Obama supporters rallying in front of the Continental Shopping Plaza Tuesday morning succeeding in accomplishing one of their goals: to increase their visibility in the community.
This was the first of several rallies that will be held in Green Valley and Sahuarita over the next few months, sponsored by members of the Democratic Club of the Santa Rita Area.
Nearly 40 area Democrats and independents donned hats, shades and sunscreen, prepared to brave the morning heat — and the possible backlash from detractors whizzing by.
“Most people have been really supportive, and I’m thrilled with the reaction,” said Diane Meyer, one of the organizers of the event.
“Three or four people yelled out nasty things, but we just kept on smiling and waving.”
Many of the supporters held hand-made signs that promoted the issue they care most about, such as the environment or education. A few read “Honk for Change” and “Seniors for Obama!”
Green Valley resident Ruth Bender, who just turned 82, says this was her very first political rally.
“I think this election is so important. It’s time for a change, and I want to do everything I can to help.”

In many areas of the country Mr. Woods would be free to select other desired items. The resident's initial call would have been ignored since the suspicious person did not seemingly gain entrance was no longer present. "
