Blooming time will soon come to an end for Les and Suzanne Hayt, owners of Greenbelt Nursery on Paseo del Prado at La Canada Drive.
A vivid presence for the past 28 years, Green Valley will be less green without the full-service nursery. Les Hayt says the decision has been made and the nursery will close sometime mid- to late-October.
He cites the primary reason for closing as the inability to find qualified, full-time help. Three of his well-trained staff — Thirza, Pam and Gaye — are moving or seeking other ventures, leaving Rhonda Gilbert as the only remaining person on staff beside the Hayts.
“It takes a minimum of one year, closer to two years to train someone. It’s very physically demanding and it’s hot being out there. We’re both old enough to retire,” Les said.
As soon as the sign about the impending closing went up at the nursery’s entrance, word spread quickly, especially because all pots, stands, trees, shrubs and roses are on sale at 25 percent off. Many plants are also on sale.
Asked why the nursery wasn’t put up for sale versus closing the business, Les said, “The land is worth more than what someone can make a living from.” He said they do plan to put the property, which is just over two acres, up for sale.
As with most long-term-owned businesses, the Hayts had their ups and downs in deciding to close but now that a decision has been made it’s a relief.
Yet to close with only three people will be very hard, he said.
“We’re one of the oldest businesses in Green Valley with the same owners. We’ve had great, loyal customers — some who’ve become good friends,” Les said.
What won’t be missed is the daily roundtrip drive from Tucson where the Hayts live; it’s time to spend some time visiting their son in Eugene, Ore. and do some traveling.
Closing will be bittersweet for Les and Suzanne; Rhonda who’s been at Greenbelt Nursery for about 18 months said, “This has been one of my favorite jobs.”
Greenbelt Nursery will continue to be closed on Wednesday and Sunday. The remaining five days it will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
