Lady Hawks basketball gets ready for new seasonLonnie Davis stepped up to take the varsity girls’ basketball coach position when Sarah Battin bowed out last year to raise a family. He’s taken charge of the team and coached them through the Pima League and Nogales Recreation League this summer. They’re now getting ready for the winter season. Their first challenge will be a home game against rival Nogales on Dec. 1 at Rio Rico, beginning at 7 p.m. “We’re looking forward to it. Playing against the Lady Apaches is always exciting. The rivalry is fun to be a part of,” Davis said.
Rio Rico wrestlers look to former championsWrestlers can look up to a row of photos of former state champions during practice in the wrestling room at Rio Rico High School. Another champion, or two, has made it to the wall for 14 of the past 15 years. Last season, two were added, senior Ramon Duarte in the 215-pound class and junior Ricky Valdez in the 285-pound class. Duarte graduated in 2009, but Valdez is back to defend his title this year. He isn’t the only contender for Arizona gold coach Dakota Beach said. “Felipe Mabante and Dakota Beach are contenders and Isaac Oroczo is Hell on Wheels.”

UA FOOTBALL BLOG: Cal 24, Arizona 16The smell of roses just got a little fainter for Wildcat fans, but it’s not completely gone. Last night’s 24-16 loss to Cal (7-3, 4-3 Pac-10) definitely didn’t help matters. Arizona (6-3, 4-2 Pac-10) had many chances to win, but this is the type of mistake-filled game that tends to favor the home team.

Storm finishes 2009 on top; Pee Wees win SAYFL crownWith a more-than-convincing 39-7 win over the Bisbee Miners Oct. 31, the Santa Cruz County Storm pee wee football team not only finished its season undefeated (8-0), but also staked its claim as the Southeastern Arizona Youth Football League champions.
Rio Rico loses to Palo Verde three straightWhile the Lady Hawks started strong against Palo Verde on Nov. 3, the Lady Titans rallied at the mid-point of game one with a seven-point run and never looked back. The Lady Titans took the day, winning the match in three games, 25-19, 25-16, 25-18. The game went well for the Lady Titans, but top player Amanda Daly, who sat out with an injury, said the team wasn’t in top form against Rio Rico. “It was good, but I think they could have done a lot better.”
Final game of the season fought with heartIt was senior parents’ night at Rio Rico when the Lady Hawks faced the Lady Bulldogs on the volleyball court, so the six seniors on the squad fought hard to win.
