SportsJET FAVRE: It feels like my eyes are lying to me. I see Brett Favre wearing a green football jersey, but something’s not quite right. It makes me uncomfortable. I remember something similar when I saw Joe Montana in this red-and-white jersey late in his career. That wasn’t much fun for anybody. Favre’s seemingly endless soap opera with the Green Bay Packers finally came to a merciful end, leading to a trade with the New York Jets. Broadway Brett? What universe is this? In the hours after the trade heard ‘round the world, every football analyst tried to break down the winners and losers in this deal. Would Favre thrive in New York? Could Aaron Rodgers lead the Packers to the playoffs? Unfortunately, nobody brought up who really loses in this deal — the poor Packers fans. When you spend that much time rooting for an iconic individual, you should get the opportunity to see him finish his career with that team. Favre might be a drama queen, and Packers’ general manager Ted Thompson might be the most stubborn man in sports, but none of that matters to the Wisconsin faithful who invested themselves in this team. If the Broncos and John Elway went through something like this, I probably would’ve stopped following football. This scenario should serve as a cautionary tale to those who root for the Colts or Patriots. If it can happen to Green Bay fans, it can happen to anyone. GETTING THE SHAKES: I can’t even begin to describe how excited I am. I have been receiving my first wave of fantasy football e-mails. My friends and I are trying to decide on a draft date, which ranks among the most enjoyable days of the year, every year. My unbeatable fantasy team from last year hit a bit of a snag, thanks to Steven Jackson’s nonstop barrage of injuries. I plan on making up for it this year. I’m still trying to formulate a draft strategy and a handful of late-round sleepers to target. Despite Jackson’s spectacular failure, snagging Wes Welker in round 10 kept me competitive through December. I’ll likely spend the next two weeks obsessively pouring over stats and rankings so I can be fully prepared to lay waste to my friends on draft day. Now that we all live in different zip codes, the web-based fantasy draft is the best male bonding activity we still have. Is it dorky? Absolutely. Is it frustrating? More than words can describe. Is it worth it? Without a doubt. nprevenas@gvnews.com | 547-9747
