LettersEditor: When I read various columnists, I expect to find something of substance, whether or not the column reflects my views. However, the column “Will the environment survive the environmentalists” (Sunday, July 27) disappointed me. I expected to find references to actual and specific programs or policies that affect the environment. Not so. The column simply leveled criticisms such as “many environmental leaders seem unpracticed at coalition building” and tend to be “radically liberal.” The columnist did not bother to provide names or substantiation. But wait, there’s more. According to the columnist, environmentalists are “perceived as partisan, anti-capitalist” as well as “hostile to human life.” The latter accusation seems based on concerns about over-population. As an example of diatribe in place of reason, the column invokes the image of China and “totalitarianism involving coerced birth control or abortion.” Again, we are not given any names or hard data regarding environmentalists whom the columnist may have in mind. Reading the column taught me nothing, except that the columnist is short on facts and long on name-calling. Jerry Belenker, Green Valley
