The O’Reilly Factor: Flying low

By Bill O’Reilly

With less than six months left in office, George W. Bush has already been branded one of the worst presidents in history by some in the left-wing press. To them, Bush is the worst thing to happen in America since the advent of talk radio.

To be fair (something the liberal media rarely are), President Bush was dealt a tough hand. Less than one year into his first term, Muslim assassins in civilian clothing started a worldwide war. To his credit, Bush has fought that war tough, if not always smart.

The campaign against terror has occupied most of the president’s time. Therefore, things like illegal immigration, energy prices and the nation’s airline system, which became enormous problems on Bush’s watch, were not dealt with aggressively. Thus, the president will leave office in a few months saddled with very low approval ratings.

For anyone who travels in America, the flying experience has become almost painful. Airlines have cut back on basic services, and the comfort level while flying is now a joke. Customers are jammed into seats, forced to endure unexplained delays and often treated with apathy if not outright disrespect.

Any other industry would have folded years ago, but many Americans have to fly, whether for business or family concerns. The airline and oil industries have similar profiles: The folks need their services; we can’t walk away.

The Federal Aviation Administration is responsible for keeping the airline industry safe and efficient. It is safe, that’s a fact. But efficiently run? Sure. So is Zimbabwe.

FAA Administrator Bobby Sturgell’s greatest achievement is that no one has ever heard of him. Sturgell is a former pilot and, apparently, unaware that many American pilots still on the job are slowly being driven crazy because of the chaos in the skies.

This is not a complicated situation. There are simply too many planes in the air for air traffic controllers to safely handle because takeoff and landing times are not regulated. Thus, the airports in New York City, Atlanta and Chicago are beyond saturated. If a cloud rolls in or a rabbit runs across the runway, planes begin stacking up back to Katmandu.

If someone would awaken Sturgell, something could be done. The federal government has the power to control takeoffs and landings. It is dangerous and a colossal waste of oil for planes to be circling all over the place and sitting on active runways for hours. Apparently, everyone understands this but Bobby.

And his boss, George.

It’s not that the president is a bad man or even incompetent. I do not believe that. But he has no sense of urgency in many matters. Problems like the airline chaos mount and are rarely solved. Hey, Mr. President, people are suffering at the airports. This should not be happening in America.

Somebody on Air Force One should tell the guy.

Re: Virtually Ninety-Nine Percent (99%) Of Polled Americans, Want You To Fire
Failed FAA Acting Temporary Administrator Robert Allan (“Bobby”) Sturgell

Dear Honorable President Bush:

As you are the leader of the free world, a veteran public servant and politician, and a Harvard MBA, I am certain that you know and are aware that the polls and the numbers do not lie.

As of this writing, virtually Ninety-Nine Percent (99%) of 700+ cyber-ballots through well-known trade website and aviation portal: http://www.planenews.com
in response to the question of “FAA’s Sturgell: Yes Or No?”, have voted that “[Acting FAA Administrator Bobby] Sturgell deserves the door today”. Less than One Percent (1%) of those cyber-polled voted to keep Sturgell for a term as Administrator. This poll was run by a web-periodical whose coverage is often favorable to the aviation industry. Please see:
http://planenews.com/modules.php?name=Surveys&op=results&pollID=47

In another and different poll run by a different entity, but arriving at strikingly-similar numerical results, such poll administered by well-known customer-based organization Business Travel Coalition: http://www.businesstravelcoalition.com
Ninety-Seven-and-One-Half Percent (97.5%) of 3,500 cyber-votes answered “Yes” to the question of “Do you think it is time for the top leadership of the FAA to resign?”:

Mr. President, you often and rightfully talk of speaking from the heart, and of acting in a manner consistent with the will of the American people. I speak to you from my heart, and I assure you that the data is well-beyond clear and convincing. It is beyond any shadow of a doubt. The overwhelming majority of the American people aware of our FAA and aviation system are clamoring for, and demanding, the immediate ouster of failed FAA Administrator “Bobby” Sturgell.

The ultimate irony is that this same failed agency head, Bobby Sturgell, has recently misrepresented to the American public an airline-company safety compliance rate with Airworthiness Directives in the “neighbor[hood] of 98 to 99 percent” – virtually the same percentage of American citizens now in perpetual outcry for Sturgell’s early and compulsory retirement. We Americans need you to protect us, and fire Bobby Sturgell.

Since Bobby Sturgell joined the Federal Aviation Administration in 2003, Sturgell and the FAA have done nothing but perpetuate the FAA’s infamous Tombstone Mentality, conceal the truth, criminally threaten those aviation inspectors who speak the truth, abuse air traffic controllers, fail to regulate, clog the airspace with malfeasance, put all of our lives and health at risk, and harm the American people. Sturgell is personally responsible for these horrific failures.

While yes, “Bobby” Sturgell has announced to senior aviation personnel that he has already given notice he is quitting his post as Administrator on or before the November election:

Sunday, July 20, 2008, “FAA’s Bobby Sturgell Quits…” -

Mister President, that’s not soon enough.

Quiet Rockland and I urge you to please do the right thing, withdraw Sturgell’s nomination as FAA Administrator, and fire him from his job. If you do not, then Bobby Sturgell will continue to jeopardize our safety and our lives, and he will be a permanent black-mark on your Presidency and your Presidential legacy. Please do not allow those things to happen. This country needs good news right now, and we need to know that the proverbial self-cleaning oven of government actually works. I am an Independent and proud American, as my many past correspondences with your honorable father will attest. This is not a party issue. This is not about politics. This is about our safety and our lives, and our collective right as a people to self-determination, truth, and well-being. God Bless You for listening, and responding, and I will be happy to return the professional courtesy at any time.

Very truly yours,

John J. Tormey III, Esq.

" Acting Administrator Bobby Sturgell and his Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continue to subject Americans to a steady-stream of jumbo-jet aircraft near-misses, unsuspecting flights on defective and unsafe airplanes, and other near- and actual disasters such as a recent fiery explosive crash in Moab Utah in which 10 innocent people were killed. Taken together, aviation mishaps are in epic numbers since Bobby Sturgell took over as Acting FAA Administrator over a year ago, as borne out by current NTSB accident statistics themselves:
http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/month.asp

Recent FAA-floated publicity balloons faux-touting claimed new technologies, ‘going green’, ‘perfect flights’, and stories of how ‘carefully’ FAA self-reviews, are only superficial charades intended to placate and distract the American people. The bottom line? Bobby Sturgell’s fake regulatory agency FAA continues to tell us it is somehow OK for FAA and the airlines, whilst back-slapping each other, to enlist publicists to tell Americans that air travel was ‘never safer’. Meanwhile planes continue to fall apart in un-inspected disrepair, FAA management is exposed as criminally threatening dutiful aviation inspectors, and passengers along with innocent others on the ground are continually put in harm’s way. FAA is a ghoulish and grotesque revival of the Oberstar-decried, Schiavo-decried ‘Tombstone Agency’ - the taped-up-in-red embodiment of the notion that ‘If the plane doesn’t crash, we’re doing great’ - the notion that a federal agency is not required to anticipate and navigate around safety problems, but only react if there are one or more tombstones.

There are 10 more tombstones in Moab, Utah.

How many more will YOU tolerate?

Those passengers were innocent Americans.

Quiet Rockland again asks all members of the United States Congress, journalists, the aviation community, all other American citizens on each side of the aisle, and all other world citizens to ‘Just Say No’ to Bobby Sturgell, and help repopulate the FAA with responsible officials for a change.
