Flooding in the Sahuarita area is expected to increase once Sahuarita Road is widened and Pima County officials are seeking public comment at two open houses next week on plans to improve drainage.

The Pima County Regional Flood Control District has scheduled a meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7, in the Ocotillo and Cholla rooms at the Desert Diamond Casino, at Interstate 19 and Pima Mine Road. The agency also is planning a meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at the Corona Foothills Middle School at 16705 S. Houghton Road in Vail.

Maps, displays and county staff will be available during open houses. After a 30-minute open house, staff will make brief presentations at 6:30 p.m., then take questions.

The study is called the Lee Moore Wash Basin Management Study and it covers an area from about I-19 east to Sonoita Highway, as far south as Santa Rita Road and well north of Pima Mine Road, including northern Sahuarita and Sahuarita Heights. The basin covers 213 square miles and runs from the northern and northwestern slopes of the Santa Rita Mountains to the Santa Cruz River, with the highest elevation being 8,175 feet near Helvetia to 2,560 feet at the river.

The meetings are being held to obtain comment on the alternatives being considered for the basin to mitigate existing and future drainage problems and to provide the public with a progress report.

A county report recommends that regional sites for retention/detention structures be selected before the area becomes urbanized and land values rise, noting that “multiple use basins which allow ranching uses, in addition to recreation, should be considered.”

“Culverts under the railroad and Old Nogales Highway should be targeted for improvement as development increases in the area. Old Nogales Highway at Summit Wash and Flato Wash is in danger of failure due in part to culvert design and in part to long run channel degradation,” the report said. The Summit and Flato washes are in Tucson, several miles north of the Sahuarita town limits.
