Collision injures Tohono O’Odham officer

A Tohono O’Odham police officer suffered life-threatening injuries Saturday morning when he was involved in a collision that sent his police car into the median on Interstate 19.

The accident occurred about six miles north of Desert Diamond Casino at Kilometer 90 near the Papago Road exit at 5:05 a.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety said. The officer was traveling northbound on I-19.

The police car caught fire after the accident. Passing motorists were able to remove the officer from the car through the front windshield.

The officer was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

DPS officers conducting the investigation found evidence of a possible second vehicle that may have been involved in the collision and left the scene.

The only information available is that the second vehicle may have been a commercial vehicle, the DPS said.

DPS is asking anyone who saw the accident to call 746-4500 or 746-4507.

Platelet collection set for Thursday

On July 31, Southern Arizona American Red Cross will conduct its first remote platelet collection drive at the Elks Lodge, 2951 S. Camino Mercado.

Donors have existing appointments, but donor candidates are welcome to drop in for pre-screening between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Takes about 10-15 minutes for pre-screening because only 25 percent to 30 percent of the general population has sufficient platelets to donate.

Platelets are essential for many specialized medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, burns and heart surgery.
