Don't stop whining

Published: Saturday, July 26, 2008 5:11 PM MST

Editor:

The good news is that former Texas Republican Sen. Phil Gramm, who described America as a nation of whiners, resigned last Friday as McCain’s economic adviser.

It’s very scary that Senator Gramm was Senator McCain’s economic adviser. With economic conditions deteriorating and getting worse, it’s time to remind voters that it was Phil Gramm in cooperation with John McCain who passed legislation deregulating financial firms and utility suppliers (witness Enron).

This led to the outrageous increase in gas prices and the home loan mortgage foreclosures by deregulated, unsupervised, ruthless lenders and energy suppliers.

That was the hands off business philosophy advocated by President Herbert Hoover during the Great Depression.

It seems we’re headed for another “Hooverville” with the laissez faire control of vital services where profits and speculation take precedence over the economic stability and welfare of our citizens. Whiners indeed — we must keep whining and register our resentment at the voting booth in November.
