Illegal immigrants’ cell phone calls for help jump

Published: Thursday, July 17, 2008 5:43 PM MST

TUCSON (AP) — Border Patrol paramedics are seeing “a tremendous increase” in 9-1-1 calls made from illegal immigrants’ cell phones seeking assistance this year

Paramedic Mario Agundez says there’s been at least a 200 percent increase in the number of cell phone-generated calls this fiscal year over last. He said it seems like more groups of illegal immigrants are aware of being able to call for help.

In some instances technology built into cell phones helps agents pinpoint the caller’s location.
