Think safety during storms

Published: Saturday, July 5, 2008 9:29 PM MST

It’s monsoon season again, and the Pima County Sheriff’s office has issued some rules and tips to stay safe during the lightning and heavy rain storms.

Lightning and heavy downpours in the Green Valley area temporarily cut power, telephone and Internet service Thursday night.

Some rules for people at home during storms:

  • Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment to reduce the draw on power companies.

  • Keep extra batteries, a working battery-powered radio and flashlights handy.

  • Stay off the phone. Even cordless phones can cause a shock if lightning strikes nearby. Use cell phones only in emergencies.

  • Stay away from plumbing fixtures such as showers, baths and sinks. Lightning can travel through metal pipes.

  • If you’re caught outside during a storm, heed “DO NOT CROSS WHEN FLOODED” signs. You can be charged for the cost of a rescue and possibly cited if you become trapped.

  • If driving, slow down.

  • If visibility is impeded, slowly and safely pull off the road and park until it’s safe to continue.

  • To escape possible lightning strikes, stay away from open fields, high land, trees, poles and other tall objects and standing bodies of water, including swimming pools.
