A local student has won a contest for designing the logo for the annual Fiesta Sahuarita celebration.

Haley Castillo, 14, was attending class at Anza Trail School when she found out about the contest.

“I heard about it over the announcements at school,” Haley said, who was in eighth grade at the time.

The contest was a chance for her to do something she enjoys.

“I’ve just been interested in drawing for a while,” she said. “However I feel, I just draw, it just comes out.”

Haley’s design, a five-pointed star with the American flag accompanied by musical notes and a swirling, abstract design, was selected out of 75 other entries, said Sahuarita Parks and Recreation Department officials. The winner was chosen by a vote by the Sahuarita Parks and Recreation Commission.

“I was really excited,” she said about hearing her name announced at school as the winner of the contest.

For winning the contest, Haley received a $100 savings bond from Hughes Federal Credit Union, and will also have her design placed on a number of items related to the fiesta.

“It will be on all of our advertising, including all of our fliers, press releases and banners,” said Recreation Center Coordinator Mario Orosco.

Most importantly, the design will appear on over a thousand T-shirts to be given away at the event, Orosco said.

Due to printing costs, entries into the logo contest had to be restricted to just a few colors, Orosco said.

“We limited it to four colors,” he said. “This logo goes on out T-shirts, and every time you add a color, there’s a fee, so it becomes a financial decision.”

The annual Fiesta Sahuarita, now in its fifth consecutive year, celebrates the 1994 incorporation of the then community of Sahuarita into a town.

The event will be held Sept. 27 at Anamax Park from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., Orosco said.

“We’ve got live music, games, pie eating contests, potato sack races, food vendors, dancers, a magician,” he said.

The Fiesta Sahuarita is free to attend.

Haley, who will attend Sahuarita High School in the fall, hopes to go on to the University of Arizona to study graphic design.
