The Fourth of July holiday may mean more outdoor activities for area residents, such as picnics, camping, fireworks and barbecues.

To make Independence Day a safe one for you and your family, the Green Valley Fire District urges residents to heed the following safety tips, said Capt. Melissa Smith, the district’s public information officer.

For picnics, and barbecues using charcoal, wood or propane fires, make sure you shelter your barbecue from the wind.

Also:

  • Place your barbecue grill on level ground away from the garage, wooden fences, sheds, hedges and long grass.

  • Keep plenty of water on hand.

  • Use firelighters or fluids fit for the purpose; never use gasoline to start a fire.

  • Never leave your barbecue grill unattended and, when you’re tending a barbecue, don’t wear loose clothing and make sure you tie long hair back.

  • Keep children away from the barbecue and, remember, alcohol and cooking don’t mix.

  • Never dump hot coals in dumpsters. Allow embers to cool completely before disposal.

  • If you’re camping, be sure to check the regulations on fires. Many areas may be closed to all fires, including charcoal grills, due to extreme dry conditions.

  • Remember that attending a professional fireworks display is the only legal way to celebrate the Fourth of July since fireworks are illegal in Arizona.

To reinforce the danger of unauthorized fireworks, Smith provided the following statistics as to why you need to leave the fireworks to the professionals:

  • In 2004, 9,600 people across the United States were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries.

  • In 2003, fireworks caused an estimated 1,600 structure fires and 700 vehicle fires, causing an estimated $58 million worth of property damage.

Smith said the fireworks at the Tubac Golf Resort & Spa tonight will be closely supervised by area firefighters to ensure maximum safety for the public.

In many areas of the country Mr. Woods would be free to select other desired items. The resident's initial call would have been ignored since the suspicious person did not seemingly gain entrance was no longer present. "
