Stay cool on hot Father’s Day

Published: Saturday, June 14, 2008 9:25 PM MST

It’s going to be a scorcher for Father’s Day — and a dangerous one.

The highs for Green Valley and Sahuarita are expected to reach 106 degrees today, according to AccuWeather.com. Sahuarita might reach 107 Tuesday.

Yuma was under an excessive heat warning Saturday, with the temperature reaching 109 degrees. Phoenix and Yuma will be under excessive heat watches Sunday and Monday, as well, according to the National Weather Services.

Highs are expected to reach 111 degrees in Phoenix and 115 degrees in Yuma on Father’s Day. They will approach 110 degrees in parts of Pima County.

Health officials are warning those manning the barbecues to keep a tall glass of water nearby and the family in the pool or indoors.

Officials also ask that residents keep an eye on those who are especially at risk of heat-related illness and death, including the elderly, the homeless and the mentally ill.

Symptoms of heat stroke include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, nausea, weak but rapid pulse, and headaches.

People with these symptoms should find shade, drink water slowly and make sure there is good ventilation.
