NewsFire at GV golf course was arson, officials say
By Jaime Richardson, Green Valley NewsGreen Valley fire officials say a fire that broke out at a golf course Thursday morning was intentionally set. Just after 5 a.m., a maintenance worker at the Haven Golf Course, 110 N. Abrego Drive, reported seeing smoke and flames coming from a door of the Pro Shop, said spokesperson Captain Melissa Smith. No one was injured in the fire. The door was destroyed and the inside of the shop sustained minor smoke damage, said smith. By the time the fire department arrived, the fire had burned itself out, she said. Deputy Fire Marshal Mark Stonestreet says some type of lighter fuel was used to ignite the frame of the wood door, which was behind metal security bars. “We have no idea who would have done this,” said one worker at the Pro Shop. “We’re not sure if the person was trying to break in or burn the place down.” The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the cause of the fire. jrichardson@gvnews.com | 547-9726
