A body was found inside a plastic bag along the Interstate about one mile south of Pima Mine Road, a spokesperson from the Sahuarita Police Department said Friday.

A motorist whose car broke down discovered the body around 10 a.m. in a dry creek bed near the entrance to a drainage culvert, spokesperson Officer Sam Almodova said.

The case is being treated as a homicide, Almodova said, and the Pima County Medical Examiner will be examining the remains, which are badly decomposed. The gender, race and age of the victim have not been determined. Police don’t know how long the body had been there, he said.

Northbound traffic was stalled from 11 a.m. into the early afternoon as officials from the Sahuarita Police, Pima County Medical Examiner and Department of Public Safety worked at the scene.

Police cars were parked along the southbound Interstate while officials searched for evidence at the other end of the culvert.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call 88Crime or 9-1-1, Amoldova said.
