ColumnsWebster’s Dictionary states that a “gore” is “a small triangular piece of land.” “Gore” areas are marked on many of our roads by solid white lines. When you exit I-19, you will see a gore area formed by a solid white line going straight up the highway and another solid white line going up the exit ramp on your left. These two solid white lines form a triangle and this is a gore area. You are not allowed to drive in a gore area. Only emergency vehicles are allowed to drive or park in a gore area. There is a very large gore area just south of Camino Encanto on Camino Del Sol. If you are going to make a right turn onto de Anza, you should be in the right vehicle lane. Starting at the curb you have the gore area, the golf cart lane and two southbound vehicle lanes. You will see that the golf cart lane is on your right and is marked with parallel solid white lines. As you get closer to de Anza, the solid white lines change to dashed white lines. You can now move to your right across the dashed white lines of the golf cart lane to the vehicle lane that now is next to the curb. Be sure to turn on your right turn signal and check your mirrors to be sure the way is clear before you move into the right lane next to the curb. The dashed white lines marking the golf cart lane change back to solid white lines as you approach de Anza, and it is illegal to drive across those solid white lines to make a right turn into de Anza. Watch for my next RULES OF THE ROAD, and drive safely. Rules of the Road is sponsored by the SheriffÈs Auxiliary Volunteers.
