NewsShasta Shasta gives new meaning to the word “fuzzball!” She is one very round, furry, energetic, and sweet black and tan shepherd/chow mix girl, who is another foundling. She was scooped up on Sahuarita Road near Wilmot by a caring man. Although he wanted to, he was unable to keep Shasta (a puppy is a big responsibility you know!). She is about 4 months old, and is simply mad about everyone - people and other dogs (probably even cats, too, as she’s pretty malleable at this age!). At her current almost 16 pounds, she will probably be a medium-sized dog when she’s grown. Naturally, she’s going to need some basic puppy training (it’s good to get started early) and then hopefully her new people will take her for more exciting and challenging “regular” obedience classes so that she will be the perfect companion. That would be fun for all of you! Freedom You might guess how Freedom got his name! Although he is the sweetest guy in the world who loves people, kids, other dogs, and even cats, he sometimes got the wanderlust where he lived because there was a whole herd of cattle right outside their barbed wire fence tempting him to chase them! What was a fellow to do? Freedom’s family was afraid that one day he was going to be mistaken for a coyote and shot, so they felt he would be safer living in “civilization” with an active family (with a fenced yard) where he could turn his attentions to them and not those other critters. He is a perfectly housebroken, 1-year-old, 66-pound, neutered, beige and white Lab and greyhound mix who will be so happy when he has kids to play with and a new loving family to call his own. He has been very settled at TALGV and shows no evidence of needing to chase. A formal obedience course would probably make him into a perfect companion in no time, so if your life needs some zest, Freedom’s here to provide it! Precious Way back in March when Precious was, as they say, “very” pregnant, she strayed into the home of a sweet young family and they very kindly took her in. She got along fine with everyone (kids, adults, and a Chihuahua) but didn’t take too well to the resident female cat. So…after giving birth to five kittens on April 8 in a TALGV foster home, she stayed there with her loving foster mom who cared for all of them for five weeks until they all came here to find their forever homes. Precious is a lovely, beautifully-colored, tabby/calico lady who is pretty young herself (maybe a year or two at the most). Her kittens have all been adopted, so she’s scheduled to be spayed and is ready to go off on her own. Her rescuers and foster mom said that although she is sometimes independent (like most cats!), she is also a real lover. Precious is hoping for a home where she will be the only feline, but will be happy to share her people with a dog and gentle kids, too! If that sounds like you, please look her way! Captain Midnight Captain Midnight has had a really scary time recently and is ever so glad that he has ended up at TALGV! His dad was really sick and alone, and when the firefighters broke into the house to rescue him, they took Captain Midnight to Pima Animal Care Center, the county facility. Thankfully, his dad’s daughter got here from Texas in time to get him released and brought him here where everyone will help him find another loving home, hopefully, very soon. Captain Midnight is a 7-8-year-old, shiny black, neutered guy with entrancing green eyes. He’s a gentle, tolerant fellow who has lived a quiet life with his dad for four years, so it would probably help him to adjust to his new circumstances if he could go to a home like that again (not that he’s not open to change, because he does love people contact and to be petted and brushed!). If you’re ready to share your life with a deserving fellow, you know that Captain Midnight is ready for you, too! For more information about these and other lovable pets waiting for their own, special home, visit The Animal League of Green Valley at 1600 W. Duval Mine Road, Sahuarita, call 625-3170, or visit www.talgv.org. If you can spare a 3- or 4-hour block of time each week, please contact TALGV to find out about the many volunteer opportunities available. Many people have left for the summer, and we are especially in need of dog walkers and people who can help us lift and move heavy items.
