A Phoenix man was killed and his wife critically injured Saturday in a motorcycle accident west of Arivaca, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said.

Around 2 p.m. Saturday, Thomas Lerner, 54, was driving east on the Arivaca-Sasabe road near milepost 9 when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a bank of rocks, Deputy Dawn Hanke said. Lerner was pronounced dead at the scene.

His wife, Leah Lerner, a passenger on the cycle, was airlifted to University Medical Center with critical injuries, Hanke said.

She said two helmets were found at the scene, though neither of the victims were wearing one at the time of the crash.

Leah was hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday.
