ObituariesNORMAN P. DUNLAP passed away on May 21, 2008,
after a courageous battle with chronic lung disease. He was born in Nevada, Iowa, on Dec. 17, 1917, to Ethel and Harry Dunlap. He is survived by his wife Jackie; children Margo (Chuck) Reeg, John (Gladys) Dunlap, Lynn (Brad Speer) Dunlap, and Kim (Tom) Arndt; grandchildren Kristin Reeg, Heidi Reeg and Clinton Martin; and three great-grandchildren. Norman studied in Ames, Iowa, graduating from Ames High School in 1935, and earning a BS in Industrial Economics at Iowa State College (later University) in 1941. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged. After working four years for the Coca-Cola Co., he returned to Ames in 1945 to start his 25 year career as an automobile dealer. He was active in the Iowa Auto Dealers Association, serving one term as its president, and on the Dodge Dealer Advisory Council. He contributed to ISU campus life as an advisor to Phi Delta Theta fraternity and on the ISU Athletic Council. He was elected to the Order of the Knoll, ISU’s most prestigious donor recognition society. He served Ames as a member of Kiwanis, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, and as president of the chamber of commerce. He was elected to one term in the state legislature in 1972. He served on the vestry of St. John’s by the Campus Episcopal Church. As a Green Valley resident, he belonged to Iowa Club and the Green Valley Alumni Club of Phi Delta Theta. He acted as membership chairperson of the Canoa Estates II Homeowners’ Association and belonged to St. Francis-in-the-Valley Episcopal Church. Norman will be greatly missed as a friend, father and husband. A memorial service will be held at Silver Springs Retirement Community on May 31, 2008, at 1 p.m. Memorials preferred to the ISU Foundation, Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation, or St. Andrew’s Children’s Clinic.
