NewsToday is Memorial Day, an opportunity to offer a tribute to men and women who served in the military. We salute their selfless sacrifice to protect our cherished freedom. The official government holiday for Memorial Day was Monday, and more than 350 local residents attended a ceremony for deceased veterans at Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery. The turnout underscored how much military service means to those who have retired here. But today is the traditional date for Memorial Day. It was first observed May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial Day is about coming together as one, to unite behind the common causes that make this country great. Memorial Day is about reconciliation and honoring troops who paid the ultimate price for freedom. By moving Memorial Day ceremonies to the last Monday in May, it allows Americans to enjoy a three-day weekend. The decision tends to blur the meaning of the holiday, though. Some of us displayed flags Monday and remembered troops in prayers. Some attended formal services. But many more hit the Memorial Day sales, drove to the mountains or used the day to unwind. The recreational aspects of Memorial Day are fine because the troops who died in battle did it so we could enjoy life in the beautiful United States of America. They didn’t expect thanks from anyone for their service. Still, we owe them a salute. If you missed your chance Monday, please take a second opportunity today to acknowledge veterans for what they’ve done. If your neighbor is a veteran, take an extra moment this morning or this afternoon and knock on the door. Offer thanks for his or her service. Veterans appreciate kindness. Part of the conversation Monday at the Green Valley Mortuary and Cemetery revolved around the younger generation. Does it understand sacrifice? Does it know what their forefathers have done? We think Americans young and old do understand the hard work of previous generations. This country did not become great by coincidence. Unsigned editorials represent the view of this newspaper.
