License plates to look for: “1 ND FAN” on a car with a license plate cover proclaiming pride in Notre Dame … “MA JEEP” … and from top spotters Dot and John Hofman … “GOOBR” … “JDS JEEP” … “FUZZMAN” … “WE KAMP” … “B SERENE” … “TO A TEA” … “OH4 REAL” … “GUSHR” …

  • Firemen in San Jose, Calif., got a surprise last Wednesday when they were called to reports of smoke from an attic … No one was home, but when they got in they found about 200 marijuana plants throughout the house…

…Firemen estimated it was worth up to $1 million…

…The occupants, renters, had installed an elaborate ventilation system for the plants…

…Firemen also said the occupants had bypassed the electrical circuits so they were getting power for free…

…Cause of the attic fire was not immediately determined…Names of the occupants ditto…

  • The Border Patrol in Southern California is trying a new tactic to keep illegals from crossing The Line…Agents have installed three-strand, concertina, razor wire along the top of some of the border barriers between San Diego and Tijuana…

…Opponents say it’s inhumane…Defenders say it works and people who don’t want to get cut shouldn’t climb the fence…

…The Border Patrol says the five-mile stretch between the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry is one of the most dangerous parts of the border…

…Mexico residents throw rocks at Border Patrol agents and agents have fired pepper spray and tear gas into the area known as Colonia Libertad…

…The fence with the razor wire on top is a secondary fence, about 50 yards inside the fence actually on the border…

…Critics say the fence is inhumane and degrading…Chief Border Patrol agent Michael J. Fisher says he’s trying to seal the border and to protect his agents…

  • And more from California…

…There’s a California town named Weed, for Abner Weed, a local lumber baron, who founded the place a century ago…

…Well…A local brewery tops its bottles of beer with caps that read “Try Legal Weed”…

    …Guess who doesn’t think it’s funny?…

…The U.S. Alcohol and Tax and Trade Bureau…It told brewmaster Vaune Dillman to get rid of the bottle caps…

…A spokesman says the caps are bad for two reasons… “We consider it to be a drug reference and find it to be false and misleading to the consumer of what may or may not be the properties contained within the final product”…

…A newspaper headline said “Government Is Keeping Us Safe From Bottlecaps”…

…Brewmaster Dillman has appealed and the decision’s due about June 1…

…If he loses, he’s got 400,000 bottle caps he paid $10,000 for…And I bet the feds won’t let him sell them for souvenirs…

  • Want to spend some time in an astronomical observatory at night?…The University of Arizona has refurbished one of its observatories on Mount Lemmon north of Tucson…

…The fee is reasonable, $48 to be a part of a small group doing some observing…And if you want more, there’s a program to let a person spend the whole night observing, one on one, with an experienced astronomer…

…The observatory is part of the UA’s Mount Lemmon SkyCenter operation…That’s a program to introduce some of the aspects of science to interested parties…
