SportsWELCOME, MAX SCHERZER: It’s almost too much fun to root for the Arizona Diamondbacks at this point in the season. The D-backs are preparing to wrap up the most successful April in franchise history. They boast the league’s most prolific offense, along with the league’s stingiest pitching staff. Perhaps best of all, they don’t have an aging former Cy Young winner mixed up in scandalous tabloid stories that detail a potentially damaging affair with a former country singer. Can things get any better for the D-backs? Actually, yes they can. Triple-A flamethrower Max Scherzer is leaving Tucson and heading to the big show. Scherzer, 21, struck out 38 batters while walking only three in 23 innings of action with the Tucson Sidewinders. He will get his feet wet in the bullpen, but will eventually evolve either into a top-notch starter or a door-slamming closer, as long as his arm stays healthy. I know it’s foolish to get too excited about pitching prospects. Just ask Cubs’ fans about Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. But with the D-backs quietly building a potential baseball juggernaut, having a player like Scherzer make his way to the bigs ahead of schedule is an unexpected bonus to an already wonderful situation. BOBCAT BROWN: On the flipside, things went from bad to worse for the poor Charlotte Bobcats fans. A few days after their owner, Bob Johnson, whined to the local paper about the lack of fan support for what has to this point been a horrible product, the Bobcats have hired the rambling man, Larry Brown, to help bring some stability to this dreadful organization. Of course, hiring Brown to improve stability is like asking Matt Millen for advice in your fantasy football league. On the plus side, Brown brings Hall-of-Fame credentials and serious credibility in the Carolina region. However, his track record as of late leaves a lot to be desired, especially when it comes to developing youngsters. Isiah Thomas might catch all the heat — deservedly so — but Bobcats’ co-owner Michael Jordan has been equally inept at judging NBA talent and running an organization. I can’t see this ending well. nprevenas@gvnews.com | 547-9747
