Hyla Beroen Lehman of Green Valley,

Arizona and formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Feb. 15. A memorial service will be held for her Friday, Apr. 25, 2 p.m. at Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley.

She was the daughter of Helene and Lewis Beroen, sister to Helen Beroen Hittle, and was married to Dr. Fredrick Lehman. Born at LuHelen’s Farm in Story City, Iowa, she graduated from Waldorf College and Drake University, and received a Master’s degree from the University of Iowa. She taught in public schools in Leland, Boxholm, La Porte City and Des Moines, Iowa, in Alexandria, Va., and Los Angeles, Calif. She also taught for the Theatre Department at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Devoted throughout her life to the arts and education, she served as national president and national alumnae director of Phi Mu Gamma, as the Iowa state president of the American Association of University Women, and as president of the board of directors of Dance Theatre of the Hemispheres. She was a performing member of the Dance Theatre for many years. She worked to establish educational television in Iowa, and was active in the Governor’s Conference on Education. For Drake University, she served on the National Commission for the Future of Drake University, and on their National Alumni Board. As a member of the Board of Regents of Waldorf College, she served as Academic Chair, and also received the College’s Distinguished Alumni Award. She worked for many years on behalf of the American Cancer Society. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, and of Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley.

She is survived by son Rolfe Lehman and daughter-in-law Dianne Wilder of Cross Plains, Wisconsin; daughter, Rhea Lehman of Berea, Kentucky; and nephew Bradley Hittle, his wife Luly and their daughter Laura of Arlington, Va.
