Sahuarita to host Rosemont meeting

The Coronado National Forest will hold two more “open house” meetings on the proposed Rosemont Mine in April before beginning formal hearings on the mine under the National Environmental Policy Act in May.

The open house meetings, at 6 p.m. April 22 at Sahuarita High School and 6 p.m. April 23 at Elgin Elementary School, are meant to familiarize the public with the NEPA process and to take initial comment from the public to create an environmental impact statement on the mine.

Comments on the mine, which would be in the Santa Rita Mountains east of Green Valley, have been extended until July 11.

  • Mail comments to “Team Leader, Rosemont Copper Project, Coronado National Forest, 300 W. Congress St., Tucson, Arizona 85701.

  • FAX comments to (520) 388-8305, attention: Rosemont Team Leader.

  • E-mail letters to comments-southwestern-coronado@fs.fed.us.

    Kiwanis Club sets Shopping Cart project

    The Kiwanis Club of the Santa Ritas has announced a service project called “Shopping Cart for Young Children” on Saturday at the Continental Shopping Plaza Safeway.

    Club volunteers will pass out a list of needed items to Safeway shoppers as they enter the store between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. They will be asked to buy items on the list and put them in Kiwanis shopping carts as they leave.

    Items collected will be delivered to young military families with spouses overseas.

    The Continental Middle School Kiwanis Builders Club will volunteer and collect items at the supermarket.

  • Miss Pima County Stephanie Brooks is the scheduled guest speaker at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the Kiwanis Club of the Santa Ritas meeting at La Posada.

    Brooks, a University of Arizona junior, was crowned Miss Pima County in December. She will be competing in June in the Miss Arizona pageant, with the winner advancing to Miss America.
